Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate – Machame Camp (3,000m)

Begin your ascent through misty montane forest filled with ancient trees and vibrant birdlife. After 5–7 hours of trekking, arrive at Machame Camp — your first night under Kilimanjaro’s towering shadow.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840m)

The forest thins into open moorlands as you ascend through rocky ridges. Marvel at panoramic views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance. Overnight at Shira Camp under a blanket of stars.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. The route offers dramatic landscapes and a first glimpse of the iconic Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp (4,670m)

Conquer the Barranco Wall at sunrise, then trek across alpine desert to reach Barafu Camp — your final base before the summit. Rest early, as your summit attempt begins before midnight.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Gate

The night climb begins under a canopy of stars. At dawn, stand on Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa — where the world lies silent below your feet. Descend via Mweka Gate, where your certificate of triumph and a lifetime of memories await.

How difficult is the Machame Route?

It’s moderately challenging — suitable for fit trekkers with some hiking experience. The 5-day version requires strong stamina.

January–March and June–October offer the best weather and clear views.
